How do I get my SA302 and tax year overview?

The retrieval route depends on how your Self Assessment return was filed. Use the matching route below, then check what you have against the documents requested for your mortgage conversation.

Before you start

Write down the document names and years you have been asked for. If the request is unclear, ask for clarification before collecting extra paperwork. This guide is for retrieving existing documents, not calculating income or completing a tax return.

For the wider preparation task, use our self-employed mortgage document checklist.

Choose the route used to file your return

You filed through HMRC online

Start at HMRC’s SA302 guidance and follow its account sign-in link. Open Self Assessment, then the details of your returns and payments, to retrieve the calculation and overview.

You or your accountant used commercial software

Get the calculation from that software; it may be labelled a tax computation. The overview remains available through your HMRC account. If an accountant filed for you, ask them for the calculation for the requested year.

HMRC says printing is unavailable for 72 hours after submitting a return. If you filed recently, note when you sent it before trying again.

Example: your accountant filed the return

You have been asked for a calculation and overview for the same year, but have only found the overview. If your accountant used commercial software, ask for the calculation from it. Keep a note of the missing item rather than treating one document as both.

A useful question is: “Please can you help me locate the calculation for the year on this request? I already have the overview.”

Make a document record

Use one line per requested document in your own notes. You do not need to send the documents through this website.

Before your conversation, compare the record with the original request. Flag missing years or anything you do not understand. Ask the person requesting the documents to confirm the format and how to provide them.

If you cannot get the documents

For software printing problems, contact the software provider. For other retrieval problems, use HMRC’s Self Assessment contact page. It also directs account-access and error-message problems to online technical support.

If your question is about your mortgage preparation, return to our self-employed mortgage guidance. Use its existing callback form when you want to discuss your circumstances; the form explains how your enquiry is passed to the advice partner.
